Chinese New Year 2020: Year Of The Rat!

During the holiday season, devouring an ensaymada with family and friends has been a big part when celebrating in the Philippines. Not only is it eaten during the holidays but it is also enjoyed all year round. A perfect every day snack especially for merienda (mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack).

When is it available?

You will be able to get your hands on our lucky red ensaymadas this weekend ONLY in our Chinatown store! They will only be available this Chinese New Year weekend so be sure to be one of the lucky ones  ;)

Come through to our store and take a bite of our delicious ensaymada or, you can pre-order now and collect in either our Kentish Town or Chinatown branch. Share your luck with everyone else with our lucky red ensaymadas.

The Chinese New year is celebrated on the first day of the First Moon of the lunar calendar and this year we celebrate the year of the Rat.

We are bringing back a piece of home from the Philippines, our scrumptious Ensaymada but with a twist for this Chinese New Year. Along side our traditional Ensaymada we will be releasing a LIMITED special the Red Velvet Ensaymada!

What is Ensaymada?

Ensaymada is a cheesy, buttery, brioche-like sweetbread. What makes the Ensaymada different from most sweet breads is the unique topping of cheese, sugar and butter, it is the perfect combination of salty and sweet mixed with the richness of some butter. The red velvet touch to the ensaymada makes it even more phenomenal! With the smooth and soft crumb cake as well as it having a dense and fudgy texture layer, covered with white cream cheese. This combination will be perfect as well as celebrating the Chinese New Year.
